Special Transportation Workshop

On Thursday, May 16th, drivers of special transportation vehicles and wheelchair accessible school buses met in the Delaney Bus Lines training room for a workshop on transporting students with special needs.

The workshop was facilitated by Mr. John Lalonde, Principal of Student Engagement with the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB).

Also in attendance was Tracy Irvine, Special Transportation Route Planner with Student Transportation of Eastern Ontario (STEO).

The program, called “Transporting Students with Special Needs: Kids Are People Too,” offered advice on how to better understand the behaviours of special needs students.  It outlined the three aspects of behaviour that a driver needs to consider before reacting in order to address those particular issues:

  • Identifying behaviours and compromised commitments;
  • Identifying the student’s needs;
  • Meeting the identified needs.

In addition, topics such as pre-trip inspections, proper loading and unloading procedures, seat belt policies and child checks were also discussed.

A big thank you to all who attended!
