Drivers of special needs students participated in the Autism Spectrum Disorder workshop at the Best Western Parkway & Conference Centre in Cornwall on Wednesday, March 9.
Facilitating the session was Colleen Thurston, an Autism Spectrum Disorder Resource Consultant with the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario.
Some days it seems the only predictable thing about it is the unpredictability. The only consistent attribute about autism is the inconsistency. There is little argument on any level that autism is baffling, even to those who spend their lives around it. The child who lives with autism may appear “normal” but his or her behaviour can be perplexing and downright difficult.
Once believed to be an incurable disorder, increasing knowledge and understanding about autism is quickly eroding this notion. Every day, individuals with autism are proving that they can overcome, compensate for, and otherwise manage many of autism’s most challenging characteristics.
Equipping those around children with an understanding of autism’s most basic elements has a tremendous impact on their ability to journey towards productive and independent lives.
The day was capped off by a working lunch provided by the Best Western Parkway & Conference Centre. Thanks to all who attended!
With bullying in our headlines, almost weekly, it is more important than ever before to say “Bullying Stops Here!” The team from Delaney Bus Lines is proud to wear pink today in support of the Boys and Girls Club of Cornwall and S D and G, Pink Shirt Day. Bullying can be stopped, but we must do it together.
The pink theme originated from an incident that happened in September several years back, when two Nova Scotia high school students organized a protest in sympathy with a Grade 9 boy. The boy had been bullied for wearing a pink shirt to school, thus the two students handed out pink shirts to all boys in the school, making a non-violent statement that bullying will not be tolerated.
Mark Begg, Manager with Delaney Bus Lines said that he was extremely proud of his team for taking part in this cross Canada, annual event. “We are only a small part of a student’s school day; however, we are committed to keeping our school buses bully-free zones.” In addition to this awareness campaign, Begg said that school bus drivers also get to participate in workshops such as: “Growing Respect on Your School Bus” and “Building Positive Student Behaviour on Your School Bus” throughout the school year.

Bullying can have serious, even tragic effects on children. Younger children are especially vulnerable to bullying, but even older children are at risk. Many incidents of school violence are at least partly the result of relentless bullying.
However, the negative effects of bullying are not limited to violence. Less dramatic but just as serious in the long run are the daily stresses children must endure in an environment dominated by a bully. Every child deserves a safe and enjoyable bus ride. Children who are intimidated by a bully on their bus are seldom ready to learn when they arrive at school. And unfortunately, the school bus can be a perfect environment for bullying.
As a result, drivers from the Delaney team who had not yet participated in this workshop got together at the Best Western Parkway and Conference Centre on February 24. Facilitated by Dianne Gauthier, the workshop was sponsored by the Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario and The Upper Canada District School Board.
The Cornwall and Area Chamber of Commerce held its 23rd Business Excellence Awards banquet on February 19 and this year’s recipient of the Above and Beyond award was Delaney Bus Lines. The glamorous evening was held in Campbell Hall at the NAV Centre in Cornwall with about 250 business professionals and local citizens and dignitaries in attendance.
Before guests were treated to a full course meal, they browsed through special areas such as a candy station, a gambling table and a martini bar where drinks were served from an ice sculpture, while sampling a wide variety of hors d’oeuvres. Before the awards ceremony began, everyone was seated and then amazed by an innovative show put on by gymnasts and a fire-handler.
Innovation is also the hallmark for Delaney Bus Lines, which received the Above and Beyond Award, sponsored by Bell Aliant. “This is overwhelming and totally unexpected,” said Mark Begg, Manager with Delaney’s. The company took first prize last year in the BUSRide magazine’s MotorVision Competition for best-looking coach.
The coach is a commuter bus to Ottawa which has a wraparound scene that includes a Cornwall Lift-Off balloon. Its purpose is to promote the Choose Cornwall initiative. The design was conceptualized by Matthew Delaney of Split Productions.

The team from Delaney Bus Lines kicked off the New Year with a murder mystery dinner theatre held at Cornwall Ramada Inn on January 29, 2011.
The annual Christmas gathering provides the Delaney team some well-deserved recognition for the hard work they do each and every day. It also provides them with the opportunity to meet many of their co-workers they often only see on the road passing by.
Further to enjoying a traditional turkey dinner and theatre production, the team from Delaney Bus Lines rallied together to help out the local Agape Centre with a food donation. “It is extremely nice of the Delaney family to provide an event like this for their drivers, so the least we could do is participate in their initiative to help give back to the community,” said Carole Fiddler, one of Delaney’s numerous drivers.

Mark Begg, Manager with Delaney Bus Lines said that he was extremely proud of his team for the amount of items donated at their annual event. “Our Christmas party gives us an opportunity to thank our team for a job well done. It was also a perfect time to come together and help out those in need. Our team did a great job!”
